Dance Nation follows a group of young competitive dancers who want to go to nationals. The characters are played by adults who are haunted by the memories of their 13-year-old selves. The play has themes of reflection, memory, and dreaming. This is captured within the distorting mirrors that act as a looking glass into the past, because memories get fuzzier and change over time. The set features subtle fractured shapes as memories fragment and stick deeply into our psyches, as well as evoking the earthquake-like quality that puberty inflicts on all of us. The set is completely modular and allows for movement to drive the narrative, taking the audience from a grounded place like the dance studio and spinning us out to a place of internal reflection for the characters.
