The Frogs
The Frogs - A theoretical scenic and costume design project (2021)
Playwright: Aristophanes
This Greek comedy follows the god Dionysus as he travels to the underworld to bring back the best dead poet to Athens to restore the quality of Greek drama. The god left the city of the living to descend into Hades, the city of the dead. This journey is marked within the set through the symbolic Greek cityscape, created by small glass buildings illuminated from within, that graduates from the warm colors of life to the cold blues of death as Dionysus ventures down the levels. The set is composed of modular components that can be pushed and pulled around the stage to evoke the flowing River Styx, where the frogs interact with Dionysus. The underworld is shrouded in sheer fabric, reminiscent of burial cloths, and visually demonstrates the veil that separates the worlds of the dead and living.
