Ubu Roi is an absurdist play about a tyrannical and disgusting king, Pa Ubu, who has no problem killing everyone to make himself rich. He is a rambling idiot who creates a spiraling, for lack of a better term, "shitshow" that leads to his downfall. The production was given a Japanese comic book by the director as a starting point. The set was heavily inspired by the graphic quality of this source material, which is visible through the sketchy quality of the environment. The set is limited in color to allow for dramatic shifts through lighting and costumes. The set activates every region of the space from far left and right, far up and down stage, and even low and extremely high to bring to life the power dynamics between the characters and their physical actions.
