On the Open Road

On the Open Road - A theoretical scenic design project (2022)

Playwright: Steve Tesich

Al and Angel, who represent brains and brawn, find themselves on a journey to the Land of the Free. The postapocalyptic landscape is wrecked by a civil war that is so entrenched in political unrest that no one even knows what side they are on anymore. Throughout the journey, the men find themselves in similar situations repeatedly, showing they really are making no great personal or physical development on this sojourn. The set is evocative of this as the turntable stage moves and the men stay in place, pushing and pulling apart the scenery as it passes them, demonstrating that both are contributing to the destruction of the world even though they may hold opposing views and very few morals.
